China's New Small Waste-to-Energy Plants
Small waste-to-energy (WTE) plants, typically modular and prefabricated, convert non-recyclable waste into electricity or heat, providing solutions for local waste management and energy production. Compared to large-scale plants, these small facilities offer advantages such as lower costs, easier integration into urban environments, faster deployment, and greater public acceptance. They use low-temperature pyrolysis technology to produce combustible gas, which powers generators, directly generating electricity. They employ advanced emission control technologies and reduce reliance on landfills by recovering energy from municipal solid waste (MSW).
How it works
Waste input: Non-recyclable mixed municipal solid waste (MSW) is transported to the plant.
Pyrolysis process: The waste is charred in a pyrolysis chamber using magnetic fields to simulate natural processes, producing combustible gas.
Power generation: The combustible gas generated by the pyrolysis of the char is fed to the generator, generating electricity.
Emission control: This technology operates at temperatures between 50 and 380°C, eliminating the generation of dioxins, heavy metals, and particulate matter from the furnace itself. Ash Collection: Inert, powdered bottom ash is collected and used as fertilizer for forest landfills.
