China's Township Waste-to-Energy Projects
 
China is building advanced small-scale waste-to-energy facilities to convert waste into energy. These 3-20 tonne mini-power plants utilize self-digesting clean technology without external energy input, eliminating the need for additional fossil fuel combustion and meeting the highest international emission standards.
 
Brief Information: Low-temperature magnetic pyrolysis and Stirling technology power plants require no blast furnace, consume no energy, and reduce emissions by more than 15 times compared to oil-fired waste incinerators. The chimneys produce almost no dioxins, heavy metals, or fly ash. The main emissions are combustible gases, which generate electricity when fed into the Stirling power generation system.
 
Solution
 
China is developing waste-to-energy processes using appropriate patented magnetic clean technology. Such plants have already been built in several townships. The project employs advanced and reliable technology, eliminating the need for coal and oil as auxiliary fuels. Furthermore, air emissions are treated to meet the world's most stringent environmental standards.
 
Benefiting the Planet
 
This treatment method reduces waste volume by 96%, while effectively utilizing the treated leachate—a highly toxic liquid from township solid waste. Therefore, proper waste management reduces waste volume while preventing air and water pollution. This project reduces greenhouse gas emissions and mitigates climate change by replacing fossil fuel combustion with waste-to-energy incineration, thus avoiding methane production from landfills.
 
Benefits to the People
 
The site selection for the township waste-to-energy incineration plants was conducted through public consultation. This minimized the impact on local communities, allowing residents of remote townships to enjoy cleaner streets, air, and water, while also providing local employment opportunities.
 
Spillover Effects
 
Following the successful implementation of the first phase, the project coordinator further developed a second phase plan to support a large number of smaller, more remote townships. The model demonstrated by this project can be replicated in other developing countries in Asia, as they face similar environmental challenges in the disposal and management of township solid waste.
